“Life happens wherever you are, whether you make it or not.”

Overview

My main focus on this project was VR lighting implementation. I was able to introduce a fake glow lighting technique, adhering to mobile VR restrictions, that enhanced the immersion and player’s presence within environments. Supplemental work included designing modular building assets that allowed for a streamlined asset creation and scene composition.

Project Tyto was formed with the intent of bringing the universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender into the immersive realm of VR. Guided by a dedicated team of artists, the passionate fan-project delved into the challenge of recreating the signature animation style, ensuring fidelity to the original while meeting the performance standards of the Meta Quest 2. Environments were meticulously crafted to validate the consistency of the animated aesthetic across various lighting scenarios.

Comprehensive early development efforts extended to characters and visual effects, harmonizing every element within the project. Leveraging Unreal Engine 5, Tyto incorporated baked lighting alongside a custom-engineered material-based dynamic lighting system. This innovative approach not only met but surpassed the demanding specifications of Meta Quest 2. Project Tyto stands as a testament to the fusion of anime-styled artistry and cutting-edge VR technology, delivering an unparalleled visual experience across multiple environments.
