Lead in Cigarette Smoke
Westminster College · Analytical chemistry · Researcher
An analytical chemistry study measuring the concentration of lead (Pb) in cigarette smoke. Smoke was collected with a smoking machine and analysed by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy at 283 nm, comparing cigarettes smoked with and without filters.
Detected concentrations fell between roughly 0.45 and 0.82 ppm per cigarette across the trials. A spike recovery of 86.26% validated the method, and independent-samples t-tests compared the filtered and unfiltered results.
The same habits — controlled comparisons, validating the method before trusting the numbers, and testing results statistically — are how I approach profiling and optimizing real-time lighting and effects.
What I did
- Collected smoke samples with a smoking machine.
- Measured lead concentration by flame atomic absorption at 283 nm.
- Validated the method with a spike recovery (86.26%).
- Compared conditions with independent-samples t-tests and charted the results.
